With school out, I have switched from reading textbooks to reading the books I want. So, of course, I started out with a book written by one of my favorite models and body activist, Ashley Graham.
I have always loved Ashley. She exudes confidence and, honestly, I would want to be her any day. But, in this day and age, it can be hard to be truly positive about your body. Even someone as beautiful as Ashley has struggled with it. I don’t want to give everything away, but I will tell you a few things she talked about in her book A New Model: What Confidence, Beauty, and Power Really Look Like.

Ashley describes her journey to where she is now. She includes every up and down she faced in both her personal life and professional career. From the rookie mistakes to wanting gelato every day in Italy, you will find yourself relating more and more to Ashley with each turn of the page. Reading about her journey through the modeling industry will inspire you to break barriers much like she did. She even shares a few pictures of her when she was twelve (she looks about my age in those pictures).
During my summer semester, I took a class called Psychology of Women. We talked a lot about media’s impact on girls’ body image and I ended up picking that topic for my final paper. It’s sad to see how many girls feel that they need to be skinnier, that they need to eat less, and that they need to lose weight all because of media. This class and my research paper showed me just how important people like Ashley Graham are.

I loved her book just as much as I love her. She is an incredible role model to have and a true inspiration to young girls. I can not say enough good things about this book. There is a good chance I will be reading it again in the next few weeks!
